God declared, “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart .” Jeremiah 29:13 As such, God has provided us with a multitude of insightful indicators of who He is…for those who seek Him. “Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead.” Romans 1:19-20 “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him.” Psalms 8:3-4 “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” Psalms 19:1 “But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will explain to you.” Job 12:7-8 “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” Matthew 6:26 “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” Matthew 6:28-29 In addition, God has also revealed Himself in the Bible. For example, God used two simple yet powerful words of “I AM” to declare Himself to Moses ( Exodus chapter 3 )—which reveals His nature. “I AM” declare God’s: Absolute dominion over all things—past, present and future. Eternal and unchanging nature. Self-existence and self-sufficiency. Presence and power. Nonexistent need to justify Himself. God also revealed Himself throughout the Old Testament. However, God’s greatest revelation to man was through His Son, Jesus Christ, who was a perfect mirror image (reflection) of Himself. “For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead.” Colossians 2:9 “They shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us.’” Matthew 1:23 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:1-5, 10-13, 14 Jesus declared, “I and my Father are one.” John 10:30 Jesus revealed to Philip, “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him. Philip said to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.’” John 14:7-11 Jesus also spoke the words “I AM” to declare His deity and oneness with the Father. For example, in John 8:56-58, Jesus revealed, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.’ Then the Jews said to Him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.’” Jesus made seven additional “I AM” declarations that continue to influence the world today. As you read each “I AM”…spiritually recognize the heart of God in His Son’s words—for God is calling His creation to turn away from their sin and darkness…and towards Him. For Jesus declared, “I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak.” John 12:49-50 1. " I AM the Bread of Life" (John 6:35) “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” This type of hunger and thirst operates within the spiritual realm. His words are intended for those who have found nothing on earth has filled the hunger and thirst that exists within their heart, soul and spirit. 2. " I AM the Light of the World" (John 8:12) “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Man’s sinful nature—influenced and magnified by Satan’s lies—is the reason why darkness exists on earth. These words of Jesus declares He is a light that exists within the darkness—to illuminate a “path of escape” to those who desire to live a life that is free from bondage to sin. 3. " I AM the Door of the Sheep" (John 10:7 & 9) “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” Jesus explained that He is the only door (or way) to salvation. Those who enter will find freedom and an inner spiritual peace. Jesus declared, “My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.” John 14:27 4. " I AM the Good Shepherd" (John 10:14) “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.” Sheep depend upon their shepherd for protection from predators, assistance when they get into trouble, and continual oversight—which is spiritually analogous to those who believe in, follow, and yield to Jesus as Lord. 5. " I AM the Resurrection and the Life" (John 11:25) “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” Jesus promised an eternal life—beyond the grave—to those who believe in Him. 6. " I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6) “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Jesus paid the full price for our salvation, and is the only means to receive God’s grace and mercy (forgiveness). 7. " I AM the Vine" (John 15:5) “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” As we seek Jesus, we learn: The depth of our sinful nature. We are completely dependent upon Him for everything—including those things we do for Him and others. He alone is worthy of all praise, honor and glory. Now take a moment to review each “I AM” statement above, open your “spiritual eyes” and determine: Do they provide insight into the nature and heart of God? If yes, how? What do they say to you? Do the seven “I AM” declarations made by Jesus mandate a response? Regarding a response…in the scripture below, Jesus declared spiritual truths, for He explained: His purpose on earth. Each person will respond to Him in one of two ways: 1 . Believe, turn towards Him, and receive the eternal benefits of His seven “I AM” promises. 2 . Reject Him, continue to be bound by sin, exist in darkness, and all justified by deceptive lies. The underlying heart-felt motivational desires that drives each person’s response. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” John 3:17-21 Now take time to reflect upon the status of your life, the desires of your heart, and your relationship with God. As you self-evaluate, realize that it is because of your belief in the sacrificial death of Jesus—as a propitiation for your sins—you are forgiven for all that you have done...and will do…throughout eternity. “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalms 103:12) For His absolute forgiveness exemplifies the love, grace and mercy of God who is calling you closer to Him. But what’s more, His continual calling (and your obedient responses) are the means used by the Holy Spirit to cha nge you from within, and prepare you to spend eternity with God. In summary, Jesus Christ was God incarnate. This means that everything that Jesus did and all that Jesus said was the embodiment and personification of God in the flesh—which gives us evidence of the attributes of God’s nature. “And behold, I   am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. I   am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” Revelation 22:12-13 I pray this lesson illuminates your spiritual understanding of the heart of whom we serve...and may you fully comprehend and embrace all of the blessings God has given you!
